This satisfying suburban hike follows Shades Creek along Mountain Brook Parkway, then crosses the Parkway to follow Watkins Creek for about half a mile. Expect to meet walkers, joggers, and lots of area residents exercising their huskies and labs. trailhead. During times of heavy rain, this area can flood, as evidenced by the leaves and debris plastered on tree limbs along the bank. The land between the sidewalk and Shades Creek is Jemison Park. Follow the creek downstream; this stretch of Shades Creek is about 20 feet wide on average and deep enough to float a small boat. As part of the Jemison Park Interpretive Program, signs along the way mark and identify various plants and trees and illuminate area wildlife. The first of these interpretive signs you’ll pass details the activity of beaver that live in the area. As you walk, you’ll also find benches on which to rest and perhaps do a bit of bird- or people-watching.

The Yellow Trail travels the lower foothills of Oak Mountain State Park through concentrated tree growth that provides a welcoming canopy of shade during hot weather. On the ridges above, longleaf pines tower over the trail. During the hike, watch for large turtles in some of the creeks you’ll cross. One of the most popular stopping points along the route is Maggie’s Glen. Trail Surface: Dirt path.

Borden Creek combines beautiful scenery with challenging paddling. The creek flows through beautiful rock bluffs—not as tall as the Sipsey, but just as impressive. Along the banks waterfalls can be heard and seen carving the rocks. Wildflowers abound, and there are a few small caves you can explore off the river. The creek is narrow, with large boulders to maneuver around and a couple of Class I rapids to give some thrills. Nestled within the confines of the Bankhead National Forest and the Sipsey Wilderness lies Borden Creek. This 5.9-mile trip is often overlooked by paddlers and is probably more famous for its namesake foot trail that runs alongside the river. But the creek is an excellent paddle for all who want to experience the wilderness and its beauty up close and personal. The Bankhead Forest that surrounds Borden Creek covers more than 180,000 acres of land in two counties. The forest was established in 1918 under the name of Alabama National Forest. This was changed to Bankhead Forest in 1942 by Congress to honor former Speaker of the House William B. Bankhead. A subarea of acreage totaling 26,000 acres was designated as an official wilderness area in 1988 and was called the Sipsey Wilderness. It is the third largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi and is home to one of the last old-growth oak forests in the southeast. Although there are no canyon walls that tower over the creek like on the Sipsey River trip, the Borden has beautiful bluffs and outcroppings that line the riverbanks. As soon as you put in, you will be greeted with bluffs to your right that jut out of the river. Many of the bluffs have interesting undercuts and small caves carved in them from the action of the creek over the centuries. Huge boulders also line the creek. We found ourselves viewing them almost like clouds, seeing images carved into the rocks.
